Chapter 21

Karen had slept well. Her meal last night here in La Caleta was lovely and walking back to the little studio apartment she had stopped to take in the view out to sea. It was so different from the Tenerife she had come to know as Los Kalanchoe was quiet compared to other parts of the island.

Once she had put the kettle on, she opened the shutters to the little balcony and the sun hit her like a spotlight. It was very special and she found herself actually thanking Sergio for coming back because if he hadn’t, she wouldn’t have been experiencing this moment. With a full day ahead of her and nothing planned, she downed her coffee, had a shower, and got ready to head out and see what the day had to offer. Looking at her phone, she stopped and paused as a photo memory from ten years ago popped up.

The photo had been taken at a family wedding and showed aunts, uncles, and many cousins, and the thing that really struck her was that it was taken prior to Jeff. It was a time she had almost forgotten all about as everything since the day she met Jeff until now had all been about him and them as a couple. As a result, her family had been pushed away.

It might have happened anyway though. She was so different from her cousins and that had been made so clear to her from a very early age. They were clever and she wasn’t. They could read, write, and do maths – and of course they won prizes for everything – and it was rubbed in her face. Did the adults that did that not understand how that might feel to an eight-, ten-, or twelve-year-old? In a way she hoped they didn’t because if they did, that would make it so much worse.

It hadn’t ended there, though, as her cousins had gone on to have fabulous jobs, lots of money, gorgeous houses, and flash cars, whereas she’d lost her home in the break-up with Jeff and was now back with her parents.

She couldn’t blame her family – or Jeff – for everything though. She was an adult and she needed to take accountability for her choices.

Come on, Karen, pull yourself together and stop getting upset. Have a shower and go out for the rest of the day. And most importantly, snap out of feeling sorry for yourself and reminiscing on the past.

By the time she had got her act together it was early afternoon and so she walked down to the water’s edge to watch the waves coming in. Hearing them break on the rocks calmed any thoughts of her childhood and Jeff, allowing her to be in this moment here in Tenerife, an island she was getting very comfortable with. But then, that comfort came with its own problems. Sergio seemed very adamant the restaurant had to go and perhaps that could be a good thing for Álvaro as he could move on, get a new job and not have that huge burden on his shoulders anymore.
